What a week in the Motherland, Ireland!  I just got back from the trip of a lifetime with my family and I can’t wait for you go too and discover YOUR roots. We experienced that legendary Irish hospitality from the moment our trip started at JFK airport in the Aer Lingus lounge.  That friendliness and openness extended when we boarded our direct flight to Dublin.   5 hours later when we landed we hit the ground running.

My sisters and I checked into the Davenport Hotel in Dublin and walked over to The Irish Immigrant Family Center.   We met with a genealogist who traced our family history back to the 1820’s in Dublin.   What a treat it was to hear about our Mom’s heritage.  She left Ireland to marry my Dad who she met while he was serving in the U.S. Army.  This is day one of our 5-day trip!

On our second day in Ireland, we started the day with a tour of the Jeanie Johnston. The Jeanie Johnston was a famine ship that became famous after it made 16 voyages from Ireland to North America without ever having a passenger or crew member pass away on board. This was particularly impressive considering the ships that made the trans-Atlantic voyages were known as "coffin ships."

Our original plan was to go to 14 Henrietta Street to see the tenements that my ancestors would have lived in. Unfortunately, due to the rain and threat of a hurricane, the museum was closed. Dublin is full of things to do, so although we were bummed we couldn't make it there, finding something else to do was not a hard task at all. We decided to check out Pearse Lyons Whiskey. Pearse Lyons has a Kentucky connection in that the whiskey is aged in burbon barrels from Lexington, Kentucky! We thought this was really cool, especially being that me and my two sisters were born in Louisville. We got a tour of this awesome distillery, which was in an old church - the whiskey stills were actually placed on the old alter! After the tour, we got to do a tasting of four of their signature whiskeys. As you can tell by my face in the video, the first was a little harsh, but the third and fourth flavors were delicious!
