What a week in the Motherland, Ireland!  I just got back from the trip of a lifetime with my family and I can’t wait for you go too and discover YOUR roots. We experienced that legendary Irish hospitality from the moment our trip started at JFK airport in the Aer Lingus lounge.  That friendliness and openness extended when we boarded our direct flight to Dublin.   5 hours later when we landed we hit the ground running.

My sisters and I checked into the Davenport Hotel in Dublin and walked over to The Irish Immigrant Family Center.   We met with a genealogist who traced our family history back to the 1820’s in Dublin.   What a treat it was to hear about our Mom’s heritage.  She left Ireland to marry my Dad who she met while he was serving in the U.S. Army.  This is day one of our 5-day trip!

My sisters and I are still basking in the glow of our EPIC trip Ireland with Aer Lingus.  It was so awesome from the minute we boarded our direct flight to Dublin at JFK.  Our first two nights were spent in Dublin at the Davenport hotel. They have an AMAZING breakfast buffet. Be sure to try the Bangers and Mash.

Day two of our Aer Lingus trip started with a tour of the tall ship, Jeanie Johnston, docked on the River Liffey and worth seeing if you go. It's very close to the EPIC Immigration Museum where we met with the genealogist who traced our family back to the 1820's in Dublin. Since our family survived the famine, we decided to learn more about what the famine meant to Ireland and how significant it was to the culture. After that, stopped by the General Post Office on O'Connell Street where the Irish Uprising began in April of 1916. You can still see the bullet holes in the enormous columns of the building that is still a working post office. We have great memories of going to O'Connell street with our mom, who is from Ireland when we were kids.  So it was great to re-live that. But since it was raining, we decided to take it inside and hop a double-decker city bus over to the Liberties area of Dublin to warm up. Nothing warms you up better than Irish Whiskey and we found a distillery in an old church with Kentucky connections. While we were there, we learned how to savor that first sip. SO fun!

Here are some of the highlights from day two of our 5 day trip. I can't wait for YOU to Discover Your Roots just like I did.

It makes me so happy to look back at the AMAZING Aer Lingus trip of a lifetime I took to Ireland with my sisters. I can't wait for you to experience too. From the moment we boarded our Aer Lingus flight at JFK, it was magical.  Honestly, the rain made it more memorable and more of an adventure. That's what I remember most about Day 3. Without the rain, the waterfall at Powers Court would not have been as gorgeous and awe-inspiring. And if I may humble brag, I did a pretty awesome job driving in the Enterprise rental car Aer Lingus provides as part of the "Discover Your Roots" package. Not to self: next time I'll wear waterproof mascara.

The weather for day 4 of my Aer Lingus "Discover Your Roots trip to Ireland with my sisters was absolutely gorgeous.  As you've seen from days 1, 2 and 3, Ireland experienced some unusually intense rain and winds while we were there. But DAY 4 was PERFECT. Great timing too, because that was the day we hit the beach to drive along the beautiful Copper Coast in Southern Ireland in County Waterford.

I've been to a lot of beaches in the world, but Ballydowane was like something from a movie. We took our time enjoying the Irish country roads and the thatched cottages along the way. We stopped for a lunch at the Strand Inn in the quaint, coastal town of Dunmore. It was the most low key day of our trip which was awesome.

On the downside, we didn't plan very well and by the time we got to Kilkenny Castle, it had closed for the day. But we still enjoyed the grounds and the photo ops in the gardens.

I couldn't believe the trip went by so fast. On day 5, we made our way back from Waterford to Dublin. Before we left Ashleigh Bed and Breakfast, I talked to our host, Phyllis McGarven, about her award-winning brown bread. My sisters and I LOVED this bread. Our mother made great soda bread, an Irish culinary staple, growing up too. Phyllis' bread was next level. Turns out she won a big award for it and it's sold in Aldi stores throughout Ireland. She adapted the traditional recipe to make it more healthy.  We loved Phyllis and her bread.

We got up early so we could be safe driving in the rain and I was determined to get in time to get INSIDE a castle. We made it in time to see what ended up being my favorite part of the trip: Malahide Castle. I'm obsessed with all things castle, and this did not disappoint. And, as an added bonus, there were ghosts.  We left early the next day on a seamless Aer Lingus flight home and I'm already planning my next trip.
