WATCH: Old Dominion Discuss Self-Titled New Record, Offer Advice to LANCO and More!

October 25, 2019

Old Dominion is back with a brand new, self-titled album! Matthew, Trevor, Whit, Geoff, and Brad sat down with Katie Neal and explained the decision to self-title the new record. "We had a running list of titles but as it came closer to the release, it seemed appropriate to self-title it...we're very proud of it and we thought the best thing was to simply call it 'Old Dominion'." They co-produced the entire album with Shane McAnally

"We didn't feel so pressured to hurry up and record a bunch of catchy 'radio diddies'" Trevor said while explaining the difference between this album and the last one. "We had time to really dive in and make sure every sound was right and every song was right, so I think the depth of the songwriting really shows."

Matthew explains the "defense mechanism" they took when writing about serious subjects in their previous songs. "It's a serious song, but HAH, don't you want to dance to it?" he says. "The new album has some songs on there that are more out there in the open, which was nerve-racking at first, but now that it's out there, it seems like people are responding really well to them."

One of those stripped-down and serious songs is "Some People Do" which they co-wrote with Thomas Rhett. The guys explain that the concept of the songs came up at the end of a writing day, but Thomas sat down at the piano and played the "sad chords" and set the tone of the song.

Before they left, the guys offered some hilarious advice to their friends in LANCO. As the defending CMA Vocal Group of the Year, they advised LANCO to "Quit Now!" and even to "Lose three members and become a duo!" On a serious note, Matthew gave props to their friends by saying "they're making the music they love and they're sticking to their guns and that's all you can do."
