Up and coming country star and Virginia Beach native Alana Springsteen sat down with Katie Neal during her first trip up to New York City. Alana had just played at the iconic Rockwood Music Hall, a popular music venue for up and coming and established artists and found the experience was everything she had hoped for. "Playing New York has been on my bucket list for a long time" she said.

Alana originally got her start singing in her community church, explaining to Katie that both of her grandfathers were pastors, and that singing in church "was my first love." She picked up the guitar when she was 7-years-old and started writing songs when she was 9. She told Katie, "I've always been in love with words and telling stories but when I put the two together [singing and guitar playing], it was like a lightbulb went off and I knew it was going to be something I would do forever."

Alana moved on from church services to performing the National Anthem at baseball games. "Once you start performing, you get the bug and you can't go back." She even got to sing at Wrigley Field when she was only 9! When she was 10-years-old, she took a trip to Nashville with her parents and discovered co-writing and was hooked! Alana explained how she loved the idea of getting several minds together and creating something totally unique.

At 14, she got her first publishing deal and her whole family moved to the Nashville area to show their support. After four years of co-writing and learning from some of the best writers in Nashville, she realized that she had to have her own voice. "Once I figured that out and found my story to tell, I signed a development deal with Warehouse West and we got to work."

Fast forward a few years to May of 2019 where she released her first EP. It was a 5-song project produced by Luke Wooten, who also produced songs for Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley. The new single she has out now is called "Feel Better," and Alana explained how they wanted to keep the production simple, being as it was written with only an acoustic guitar and her vocals.

Before she left, Katie had to ask the obvious question: What exactly is her relationship to Bruce Springsteen?

It turns out that Alana and 'The Boss' are distant cousins. "Probably 5 times a week I get asked this...the first thing you see when you type my name in on Instagram, the first thing that comes up is 'Alana Springsteen's dad.' People Google it and try to figure it out!"

"I actually found out a couple of months ago we are related but it's pretty distant. He's like my sixth cousin... so when I tell people I just say 'yeah we're related' and just leave it at that."
